Williams Gallas’ 73rd game within the French team will certainly not be remembered as any other.
He has been on of France’s main players for several years now, and his function in this team has been increasing constantly since his first game ever on October, 12, 2002. In Torshavn, where play was to face the Faroe Islands for the 2010 World Cup Qualifiers, William Gallas was designated captain of the French squad by his coach Raymond Domenech.
“I’m proud to be the captain tonight” said William during the pre-match press conference. Starting the game alongside with Seville’s Julien Escude in defense, the Gunner did not have much to do as, to be honest, the opponents did not show many skills. Faroe’s forward almost never got France’s defense worried. However, they seem motivated as usual when receiving a great national team. Thereby, as the strikers had a go in the penalty box, William used all his experience to chase the danger away, although his physical shape will certainly be better as the Premier League goes. Indeed, he did not play much this summer and coming back the competition for those qualifiers was certainly not easy for the French defender.
Eventually, Raymond Domenech could be satisfied after his team defeated the rather weak team of the Faroe Island (1-0) with a goal from Toulouse’s André-Pierre Gignac just before half-time. The score could have been wider, but there was some waste in the last movement preventing Gourcuff, Ribery or else Chelsea’s Anelka and Malouda to score more goals. However that may be, this first time as the captain of the French team was a success for William, who might be given the armband again as Thierry Henry or Patrick Vieira are not on the field.
